How to get the Most Out of your Plugins

Are you getting the most out of your plugins?

I have to admit when I first started blogging I would install a plugin activate it and not really read through the instructions on how to use it. I was just like a kid with a new toy. I would rip open the package of a new toy and just start playing with it without paying too much attention to the instructions. I mean really who wants to read through instructions. I just want to play. Typical kid at heart I guess :)

Well a friend of mine, Matt Wolfe, recently recommended a plugin to me in one of my last posts about Meta Tags. It’s called Platinum SEO Pack. Now I have had the All-In-One SEO installed since I started my blog, but I thought I would go and check out the Platinum SEO Pack. So I went to the plugin page to add a new plugin and I installed the Platinum SEO Pack and activated it. Now instead of just fishing around trying to use it I thought I would go to the developers website and read a little bit more about it before I started playing around with it. I found an interesting piece of information that some of you may know already, but I thought I would share it with everyone.

Now everyone knows that post titles are fairly important for SEO. What I didn’t know or what I really didn’t think about was that there are really a couple of different audiences for these post titles. There is the Human Audience and the Search Engine Audience. Both of these audiences look at the post titles a little differently. Let me explain.

The Human Audience likes nice creative titles. They need something that grabs their attention and pulls them in. They need a post title with a bit of style and pizzazz. They are not particularly looking for keywords when they look at titles, but they want something that opens there eyes and makes them want to read more about the subject. I mean think of yourself when you go into a bookstore. What makes you pick up a certain book? The cover sure and the title.

Now on the other hand Search Engines look at the post titles a little bit differently. Search Engine algorithms look for keywords in the title. Search Engines are not particularly looking for a visually fancy looking title, but what they do want are keyword enriched titles that grab their attention.

So the question is how do you create a title that grabs the attention of both audiences?

For the title that is visual to your Human visitors make the title appealing to them something with style that grabs people’s attention. Don’t worry too much about keywords in this title. I mean sure you want to have a keyword in it, but you also want to make the title something that pulls people in and keeps them reading.

Now for the second title for the Search Engines. This is where the Platinum SEO Pack helps you. The Platinum SEO Pack allows you to add a second title when you are publishing the post. By installing the Platinum SEO Pack a form on your new post screen is created that allows you to add a second title to your post. This title isn’t visible to the humans that visit your site, but it is visible to the Search Engines in the form of a Meta Tag. So with this title you want it to be keyword enriched to grab the attention of search engines.

I will admit I am still learning how to create proper titles for both audiences. It is still a work in progress, but I believe with a little work you can create a great title that will pull in both audiences and really drive traffic to your site.

I do believe the All-In-One SEO also allows you to add a second title to your post. I have to admit at that time I wasn’t using the 2 title feature properly, but now as I create new posts I am going to start adding the second titles geared for the Search Engines. We’ll see if this helps.

So just remember in order to get the most out of your toys you need to read the instructions :)

I have never heard of Platinum SEO Pack before, but it definitely sounds like something I need to check into. I never knew it was possible to show your audience one thing and the search engines something else. I would imagine this can be very useful with SEO. Thanks for the tip Jim!
