How to Drive Traffic to your Blog

TrafficFree Beer = Traffic

Ok so how does Free Beer = Traffic. Let me explain.

I want you to know that I am a new to blogging and driving traffic to your blog on the internet. Traffic on the highway is not something I like. Traffic at my blog now that’s something I like. I am not an expert at driving traffic to your blog, but I can give you one method I have used to get visitors to my blog.

So I started my blog on 7/6/2009 and had zero I mean zero visitors. If you were standing in my blog and you screamed your voice would echo like screaming into an empty cave. Now as of today I have had about 169 visits with 33 unique visitors. At least that’s what Google Analytics says. Sure I don’t have thousands of visitors, but I am happy to have had any visitors at all. I get excited every time I see a new visitor. I personally want to thank everyone that has come to see my little pathetic blog. It is ok you can say it its pathetic. I am working on it. The way I see it can only get better from here.

So how did I get some people to visit my pathetic blog?

Let’s think of it this way. Let’s say you are having a party at your house. Now you could just sit there at your house and wait for people to come, but if you don’t get the word out no one will show up to your party. Right? So you decide you need to do something to get the word out.  So you pull out some poster board and a sharpie and decide to make up a poster that reads something like this:

FREE BEER!beer

Ok so now you got a poster, but what do you do with it. Do you stand in the middle of your living room and wave it around? Well no one will see it. You need to post it up in different places so people know you are having a party. So you post the poster in different places and bingo you wait and people come flocking to your party. Make sure though that you put your address on the poster so people will know where you live. No address no people. Also make sure you have enough beer. Free Beer also means a lot of people.

How does this relate to Driving Traffic to Your Blog?

Well think of your blog as your house. Your house has an address and so does your blog. You can write posts all day until your fingers curl up and you get carpel tunnel syndrome, but if you just post them in your blog and wait for people to come you could be waiting a long time before anyone shows up. So what you need to do is get your blog address out there so people will come.

So how do you get your Blog Address out there?

One of the best ways that I have found to get your blog address out there is to visit other people’s blogs and make comments. And check it out its Free to make comments. I started to do this and it’s amazing how many people have come to visit my blog.

See here’s how it works.

You make a comment on someone’s blog. They read your comment and visit your blog. You suddenly have a visitor. But wait it doesn’t stop there. Now remember you made a comment on their blog and your blog address is in the comment. Suddenly your blog address is exposed to all the people that visit that person’s blog. Now someone visiting their blog sees your comment and decides to visit your blog and make a comment. Bingo you have another new visitor. Now you read their comment and visit their blog and make a comment. Now your address is exposed to all the people that visit their blog and so on. See the chain reaction. Of course you can apply this to other places such as forums and other places of interest and before you know it you will have many visitors to you blog. Give it a shot what have you got to loose.

Additional little trick. Get the CommentLuv Plug-in for WordPress. What this actually does is when you leave a comment it leaves a link to your latest post.

Now you could go along and make short little comments everywhere with your blog address. But I wouldn’t totally recommend that. You want your comments to be meaning full so people will come to your blog. But I do like Stefan Nilsson’s idea about going out beyond your circle. I mean who knows who might be interested so why not give it a try. Just be careful not to place your “Free Beer” poster in an Alcoholic Rehabilitation center. They might not appreciate that.

Remember what I said about Free Beer = Traffic. Well give something away for free and you are bound to drive traffic. People love Free Stuff.

How do you drive traffic to your blog? Please leave comments. I welcome your advice.

Thank you for mentioning me Jim, I appreciated it.

I’ve said it before and will most certainly say it again. Blog commenting is without doubt the easiest method to get other bloggers to discover you. Even though you can get hundreds of visitors from search traffic, bloggers is much better when it comes to growing your blog since there’s a good chance that they will link to your site.

    Hey Stefan
Honestly I really like your idea. I mean it is true you can get a lot of visitors in your circle, but why not go outside the circle. I mean everyone that has a blog needs traffic so others could use the tips. At the same time you can learn from other people outside your circle. You gotta think out side the box.

Again Thanks for the tip! It made me think

  14. Hi Jim.

It´s the first time I visit your blog and I like it. Above all I like your sense of humor. You are right with the statement Free beer= traffic. You did a good metaphor (party=blog).

When you go to a party if you don´t feel comfortable you leave it. That´s why we have to do our best preparing our blog. Another good metaphor would be when we are going to receive visitors at home because we organize and clean the apartment to show the best version of ourselves.

    Good article, congrats!

You are right if you like the party you will stay, but if you don’t like it or if it makes you uncomfortable you will not spend much time there. I am hoping to provide people with some good information so that they will feel comfortable and stay for a while. I already checked out your blog. Its really cool! I like it. It is very clean and organized with a lot of great information.

    Hi Donnie
Thanks for coming by and commenting. I do appreciate it. It is hard sometimes to find the time to take care of my blog. I have to say though ever since I started it it has been very exciting and I really do enjoy creating new posts and seeing comments roll in and responding to them. I have met a lot of great people and it is fun interacting with blog readers.
If you ever want to start a blog let me know if I can help. Its hard to get started and once you get started you will probably enjoy it. I feel at times I am addicted to it. I want to constantly check my blog for comments and watch the traffic grow.

Yup. Thats a nice way of promoting your blog. But stay away from spamming other blogs, that will hurt your online reputation and more often than not your comments will get deleted.

    [Reply]

    Jim Hardin Reply:

Yes its true commenting on other blogs can help you get visitors to your own blog, but you have to make quality comments. You need to take the time to read the post and make a meaningful comment on other peoples blogs or you will be considered spam. If done properly you will bring others to your blog because you make meaningful comments that other bloggers and visitors will read. Not only that but I learn a lot by reading other blogger posts and you will build a rapport with other people by making meaninful comments.
