How to Properly Use Permalinks

What is a Permalink?

I didn’t really know what it was until I read a post on Isaac Yassars blog www.goblogger.net. Well a Permalink is created for each post/page and probably other things that I don’t even know about. When you first create your blog the setting for a Permalink does not have a lot of meaning. It is in an ugly format that really isn’t useful for Search Engines. What Search Engines like are Pretty Permalinks with keywords. So how do you change it. Well its pretty simple. Even I could do it.

1. Log into you blog
2. Go to Settings/Permalinks
3. At the top you will see Common Settings

Mine looks like this
Default                             http://www.jimyjack.com/?p=123
Day and name               http://www.jimyjack.com/2009/07/28/sample-post/
Month and name         http://www.jimyjack.com/2009/07/sample-post/
Numeric                          http://www.jimyjack.com/archives/123

4. Choose a setting for your permalink. Isaac suggests Month and Name. This makes the permalink more pleasing to Search Engines. For this particlular post it looks like this http://www.jimyjack.com/2009/07/permalinks/. As you can see the name of the post is in the Permalink.

A word of caution. Changing to a Prettier Permalink is good if you have a new blog, but if your blog is well established it may not be a good idea. Isaac says it better. Take a look at his blog. He has some useful information.

   Hey Isaac!
   Thanks for stopping by. I at stumbled upon your blog and enjoyed reading your posts. I am slowly trying to build my blog with good content. You have some great tips on your site and I like the way your site is formatted and easy to read. I noticed we have the same theme (I think) although yours looks much better.

   Now I use the premium version of frugal Theme.

   Btw for iNove, you can have your header designed, like my iNove header was. I had my header.jpg designed and I didn’t display the default title and tagline from my style.css . So my title and tagline were actually the parts of my custom header.jpg .

   I am still a bit new at this. I don’t know how to customize my header. I have looked at editing it a bit, but I was afraid to mess it up. Well maybe someday.

   Jim, I got the same theme nice post on permalink here suggestion. you want to change them like you said at the begging, remember seo looks at and ways you url so date really has no value. Try googling and see if you can get some suggestion. Generally you can switch it to use you catagories which should relate to you blog and have value. Just learning seo myself hoping to get my hands around it next month but this will help your site with the search engines.

   Thanks for coming by. Yeah I am just learning the ropes myself. I started this blog about a month ago to develop an online business. It has been somewhat of a dream of mine. There is a lot of stuff out there to learn but you just need to focus on what you want to do and drive forward.

   Permalink structure is where important for the success of a blog. I personally use the following permalink structure:

   http://www.blogname.com/article-title

   There are other good permalink structures, but this remains to be my favorite.

   You must be very important in selecting permanent post link structure for your blog. Once selected it’s not advised to change it. If you still want to change your blog post permanent link structure, you must install some plugins like smart 404, which will help to minimize the 404 issues and also you must do proper modification(301 redirect of old urls to new urls) in your .htaccess file.

   I recommend all new bloggers to choose the link structure like http://www.jimyjack.com/sample-post.html or http://www.jimyjack.com/sample-post/

   In the above two url structure search engines love 1st structure than second one, but humans love second structure than 1st one.
