Google Adwords

My Google Adwords adventure went a little something like this. I was searching the internet looking for a way to make money on the internet. I came across Google adwords. I know most people know what Google Adwords are but I thought I would just explain just a little to let those that don’t. You know when you do a search on google and on the right hand side there are a bunch of 3 or 4 line ads. Well people create those ads so when you click on them and buy something then the person that placed the ad gets a commision. I thought to myself how hard is that. Create an ad. The ad appears in a google search. People click and buy stuff and I make money. So I tried it. It isn’t really that hard to set up. You get a google account. You find a product you want to promote. You can find products on Clickbank and Commission Junction. You have to sign up for these sites but it is free. Once you create an account in you have access to You create an add using keywords and post it. What you have to realize is that when people click on your add you get charged when people click. It depends on the keywords. I used good keywords, but those good keywords cost you. So needless to say I did get clicks, but I didn’t get buys. So $327 later I decided I had better stop my ads as obviously I need to learn more about it. Truth I think you can make money. You just need to find what you want to promote. Target the ad to the people that will buy the product. Use the proper keywords for the product you are promoting so that when the people that are searching on google they see your ad click and buy the product.

    Hey Jim,
It’s always interesting to read about people’s experiences with AdWords. A while back, Matt Wolfe and I experimented with various runs at promoting CJ offers with AdWords with little avail.

It’s never fun losing money, but there is always something learned from it! I’ll be watching to see when you’ve got it down.

Best of luck to you, my friend!

    Hey Jim,
It’s not online yet. But I wrote an article for my good friend Bill Romer about a success story that I had with AdWords and Clickbank. The article will be live tomorrow morning over at http://www.askbillromer.com

I recommend you check that article out because it’s a technique that actually works. :)

You won’t ever learn if you don’t try. I’m glad to see that you are trying things!

  3. I suggest go for a key phrase thats a moderate one. Like if there are 10000 searches for the main key phrase. You go for the one that has abt 3000 searches.. and you’ll get real traffic with lesser investment

Great tip thanks! I think you are right I was using words that are high searches and I was getting a lot of clicks, but no sales. Maybe I will give it a shot again.

    Thanks!

I’ve read and heard a lot about AdWords, but I haven’t ventured into trying yet. One piece of advice that really made sense, was targeting very specific terms. For example, if you were selling High End Digital Cameras (Say Nikon and Canon), don’t target “Digital Cameras” as a keyword. Build different, fine tuned campaigns, such as “Buy Nikon Digital Camera”. You’ll get less searches this way, but the visitors should (in theory) be more targeted.

I need a cup of coffee, but let’s hope I made sense here.

Thanks Ryan! I think that was my problem. My keywords were too general. Of course I didn’t know what I was doing, but I thought great I must be doing something right because I was getting clicks, but after a while of getting clicks and no sales I was like geez I guess I am doing something wrong.

If I ever try it again I will follow your advice. You’re right you need targeted traffic to get sales. It made sense. I think I need a cup of coffee

    Hi Jim,

I was working with Adwords a lot at the beginning of last year and made a ton of sales. However, I spent a lot of money too. LOL Sometimes I would make more than spent but then I’d spend more than I made.

Unfortunately, I received an email in December that my account was banned because one or some of my previous campaigns didn’t meet their TOS. I am banned for life. I guess they did a mass ban on all kinds of advertisers. I was learning though, you would think they would allow for you to make some mistakes. I know none of my ads were sneaky or trying to rip people off in any kind of way.

Anyhow, make sure you meet all of their requirements to get high quality score. =)

    Hey Heidi!
Yeah that google is touchy about Adwords. You make one wrong move or whatever and they ban you. I was sometimes just having a hard time getting the actual ad to be accepted. Anyways I haven’t played around with Adwords in a while as I think I was always loosing more money than I was making. I may try again someday though :)

Thanks for coming by Heidi :)

  6. Adwords is really good in driving traffic to your website. however, they are very strict right now and they would not easily approve websites that they thought have low quality content. .`
